Background of the Study
Indigenous knowledge in Ovia North-East has long been a critical asset for adapting to environmental challenges, including those posed by climate change. This body of traditional wisdom encompasses agricultural practices, weather prediction, and natural resource management that have enabled communities to maintain economic stability in the face of environmental variability (Okojie, 2023). Indigenous practices, such as mixed cropping, water harvesting, and organic soil fertility management, are integral to sustaining livelihoods and promoting economic adaptation (Ileana, 2024). With the increasing impacts of climate change, there is renewed interest in how indigenous knowledge can be integrated with modern practices to enhance resilience and economic sustainability (Udo, 2025). This study examines the role of indigenous knowledge in shaping adaptive economic strategies in Ovia North-East, exploring how traditional practices can be harnessed to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change on local economies.
Statement of the Problem
Climate change poses significant challenges to traditional livelihoods in Ovia North-East, affecting agricultural productivity and natural resource availability (Okojie, 2023). Although indigenous knowledge offers adaptive strategies, its integration with modern economic practices remains limited (Ileana, 2024). This gap results in reduced resilience and economic vulnerability among local communities. The lack of formal recognition and support for indigenous practices further undermines their potential to counteract climate change impacts. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of indigenous knowledge in fostering economic adaptation and to identify strategies for its broader integration (Udo, 2025).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the contribution of indigenous knowledge to economic adaptation to climate change.
To identify traditional practices that enhance resilience.
To propose strategies for integrating indigenous and modern adaptation methods.
Research Questions:
How does indigenous knowledge contribute to economic adaptation in Ovia North-East?
What traditional practices are most effective in mitigating climate change impacts?
How can indigenous and modern adaptation strategies be integrated?
Research Hypotheses:
H₁: Indigenous knowledge significantly contributes to economic adaptation to climate change.
H₂: Traditional practices enhance local resilience against climate variability.
H₃: Integration of indigenous and modern strategies improves economic outcomes in climate-affected areas.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it highlights the crucial role of indigenous knowledge in economic adaptation to climate change in Ovia North-East. The findings will provide guidance for policymakers, environmental agencies, and community leaders on integrating traditional practices with modern adaptation strategies, thereby enhancing resilience and sustainable development in climate-vulnerable regions (Okojie, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to the role of indigenous knowledge in economic adaptation to climate change in Ovia North-East Local Government Area, focusing on local traditional practices and their integration with modern strategies without extending to other regions.
Definitions of Terms:
Indigenous Knowledge: Traditional wisdom and practices developed by local communities.
Economic Adaptation: Adjustments in economic activities to cope with environmental changes.
Resilience: The ability to withstand and recover from adverse conditions.
